Fishwick Papers: The "Prelude to the Presentation of the Premise" Edition

Good evening! Here I am, at the end of a working Friday, sending you a Fishwick Paper. What a throwback! I hope it finds you well, wherever you are in the world. I'm still in Aotearoa, currently in lockdown, and I'm happy to say that I'll be firing up the Fishwick Papers machinery again (albeit at reduced capacity) over the next few months. I've got quite a raft of Things™ to send you lined up, and rather than trying to send 15-ish links a week like I was in the old days, you can expect a smaller collection of (still interesting) things, several times a month, starting next week. Before I do, I wanted to quickly update you on a few things I've been doing since I last wrote to you:First, I started a Patreon! If you like the Fishwick Papers, and want to support it and the other writing, performing and podcasting work I do, you can sign up for Jim Membership for the low, low price of Some Dollars. This directly supports me and helps me work on my cool creative stuff (including The Fishwick Papers). If you don't have the money to sign up, I totally get it. I still value non-monetary support as well!Second, I started a podcast or two! One is called Escape Hamilton, in which my wife Kirsty and I do and review escape rooms around Aotearoa (and sometimes the world)! The other is called I Get That A Lot, in which I interview people about the annoying jokes other people make about their name. I'm really very proud of both of them and it would be delightful if you wanted to listen to them, which you can do in all the major pod places. Finally, I've been writing about improv! I contributed a feature article to the first issue of Present Journal, a new magazine about improv in Australasia – you can download it for free here. My friends at Improv Theatre Sydney also invited me to give a short talk as part of their Rant Academy webinar series, where I went deep on why people interrupt each other so much in improv scenes – you can watch the video here or read the transcript here. And I didn't write it myself, but I was very proud to be the editor of my friend and colleague Patti Stiles' debut book Improvise Freely. It examines the idea of 'rules' in improvisation, how they emerged, and how they affect the work of improvisors the world over. It's really very good and if you're an improviser of any experience level or discipline, I recommend it very highly.Okay. Those are the projects I have to share. I've also been performing around the place and doing this and that (and working on things that will come out soon), but I won't go on too long.Next Friday, a return to interesting links about all the things I'm interested in. If you've read/watched/heard something interesting recently that you think might make a good inclusion on the list, do reply and let me know! If you know someone who might be interested in receiving the Fishwick Papers, send them here to sign up!With all the love and gratitude in my heart,BYEEEEjim xoxoxo
